This is RPMized version of webster. I used patch from Debian GNU/Linux distribution and I leave this copyright. Thanks, Kirk and Robert! (C)Nidd. This is the Debian GNU/Linux prepackaged version of Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, published 1913 by the C. & G. Merriam Co., Springfield, Mass. under the direction of Noah Porter, D.D., LL.D., formatted for use by The DICT Development Group's client sever software. The formatting software was written by Rickard E. Faith (faith@acm.org). This package was constructed by Robert D. Hilliard from sources obtained from ftp.dict.org/pub/dict. Changes: * added Debian GNU/Linux package maintenance system files * Modified webfilter.l and Makefile to handle modified tags. Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary was originally licensed by Patrick Cassidy and MICRA Inc. under a non-DFSG compliant license and distributed by the Dict project. After some correspondence, Pat Cassidy agreed to issue a public domain version. Since the many of the tags in the public domain version have been modified from those used in the earlier version, the formatting software does not work without modification. The upstream author of this software intended to modify the formatter for this, but has not had time to do so. Therefore I (Robert D. Hilliard and Kirk Hilliard , have modified webfilter.l and Makefile to handle these modified tags. Some tags may not yet be treated properly. If you notice any odd text that may be due to these tags, please file a Bug Report. Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary is distributed under the following notice: This version was prepared by MICRA, Inc. of Plainfield, NJ. This version has some of the tags of the copyrighted version either modified or deleted, and MICRA Inc. makes no proprietary claims regarding this version. We believe that the original 1913 dictionary of which this is an electronic transcription is public domain, but we can provide no assurances of that fact. If the original 1913 dictionary is public domain, these files can be treated as public domain. Users must be aware that this is an imperfect transcription of an antique dictionary. It reproduces all errors and out-of-date information in the original, and adds many typographical errors. Some of the original information, especially pronunciations, is still missing. It must be considered as only an interesting historical artifact and must not be relied on for any practical purposes. A searchable indexed version of this dictionary may be viewed at: http://humanities.uchicago.edu/forms_unrest/webster.form.html This version is only a first typing, and has numerous typographic errors. We are in the process of updating this dictionary and expanding it to include more comprehensive encyclopedia-like articles. The expanded dictionary/encyclopedia will be available freely on the web, and will be open to contributions of definitions, articles, images, and other useful resources from any interested person. Assistance in developing such a comprehensive reference work for easy internet access to basic information is requested from anyone willing to share their knowledge freely with the world. There are many tasks needing to be done, from proofreading to tasks requiring more technical expertise, in order to make this reference work more comprehensive, modern, and useful. Anyone who can spare ten or more hours of time within the next few months will be able to make a useful contribution to the project. Anyone willing to assist in any way in constructing such a knowledge base should contact: Patrick Cassidy cassidy@micra.com 735 Belvidere Ave. Office: (908)668-5252 Plainfield, NJ 07062 (908) 561-3416 The formatting software is distributed under the following license: * This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it * under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the * Free Software Foundation; either version 1, or (at your option) any * later version. * * This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but * WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of * MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
